Epidemiological update
Within the last 24 hours, 5 new confirmed cases were reported in the EU and EFTA countries, reaching a total of 222 confirmed cases reported from 16 countries. This includes Belgium, which confirmed its first case with history of travel to the United States. The number of reported cases infected through in-country transmission in Spain increased to 22.
Outside the EU and EFTA countries, the number of confirmed cases increased to 6275 new influenza A(H1N1) virus infections, reported from 18 countries (Table 2). Thailand, the first country in the area of the WHO Regional Office for South-East Asia (SEARO), reported the first 2 cases, both of whom have a history of travel to Mexico. Also Cuba reported its first case, also with a history of travel to Mexico.
Assessment and response in the EU and EFTA countries
While no sustained community transmission is reported from any of the EU and EFTA countries, small clusters and sporadic cases of in-country transmission continue to be identified. The containment of these in-country transmissions currently remains the priority for Europe, in an attempt to avoid wider spread of the new influenza A(H1N1) infection on the continent.
ECDC, in collaboration with the Member States, the European Commission and the World Health Organisation, continues to closely monitor this rapidly evolving situation, and provide daily updates on its website.
